"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Just like computer join as domain station or are standalone, there is a central authority (like Active Directory) overseeing those machine, be it with domain or local policy. In mobile device context, similarly, MDM is the central authoring storing those policies to look after from the device lifecycle cycling around provisioning, enrolment, deployment, enforcement, compliance and decommissioning... See this starter https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn646960.aspx

MS Intune, is just one of the many MDM and this technet goes into the how to configure to get the device (Android, Apples, Windows mobile) provisioned. The point to note is that the MDM managed device can be also be your personal smartphone which most termed as the "bring your own device" (BYOD) approach. See this for more insight https://technet.microsoft.com/library/dn656905.aspx

Otherwise, for Enterprise, the MDM manage company-owned (or issued) devices which users may still be able to choose from, also known as "choose your own device" (CYOD). If I summed up the baseline capabilities of MDM, it covers mainly
-Manage device certificate, email, VPN and Wifi profiles.
-Manage corporate-owned iOS devices.
-Provide mobile application management.
-Enforce conditional access policy in usage.
-Enforce centralised passwords management.
-Provision consistent application settings.
-Configure device capabilities, cellular and voice usage.
-Recovery support via reset passcodes, lock, selectively wipe or retire devices

See this for the to-do to run through such lifecycle and the corresponding MDM "bolts and nuts". https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn600287.aspx
