I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The advantage is that the laptop doesn't have to supply all the power itself. Also, although USB 3 can deliver more power than previous USB standards, that doesn't necessarily mean that all mainboards are built to that standard and that they can actually deliver that amount of power. So again, with a powered hub you should always be better off and on the safer side.

How to safeguard against overpowering your USB devices when using a USB hub with a external power source.

Also will a USB hub with a power adapter work without a power supply. Say like a USB adapter without a power adapter if I feel my USB devices don't need an external power source in case i attach only my pen drives to the USB hub and attach the external power supply to the USB hub when I connect my power hungry external HDD to the USB hub
>>  Also will a USB hub with a power adapter work without a power supply  << YES it works fine without the AC connected
so your plan is good

**i do it all the time

Overpowering? How do you want to overpower a device? You can't over power anything. The device just draws the power it needs from the USB port. The voltage is fix, so there is no problem there, and with anything else, the amps are drawn by attached device, it can't draw more than it requires, unless it is already defective. The power supply just ensures there is enough power available.

When will I need to use external power on the hub..
When your devices don't get enough of it from the PC. Normally I'd use power for the hub at all times, as disconnections or malfunctions are then less likely.
>>  When will I need to use external power on the hub..  <<  not so often as in usb2, which had a max of 5V at 0.5 A = 2.5W, while usb  3 delivers 900mA, giving a power output of 4.5W
in most cases, you'll need this for rotating disks, and other devices consuming more than 100-200 mA

1. Blue: Supports USB3.0
2. White: Supports USB3.0 charging
3. Red: Charging Port. Only supports charging
