Advantages or Disadvantages of USB 3.0 port with power adapter

My laptop has only 2 USB ports. 1 USB 2.0 and 1 USB 3.0

I want to attach the following perepherals to my laptop: USB 3.0 external HDD, 2 USB 3.0 pen drives, A tethered cellphone 3G connection (with charging) , mouse and keyboard and 2 monitors.

Should i buy a USB 3 hub with or without an external power adapter.

What are the advantages or disadvantages of USB 3.0 hub with power adapter

How to safeguard against overpowering your USB devices when using a USB hub with a external power source.

Also will a USB hub with a power adapter work without a power supply. Say like a USB adapter without a power adapter if I feel my USB devices don't need an external power source in case i attach only my pen drives to the USB hub and attach the external power supply to the USB hub when I connect my power hungry external HDD to the USB hub

I noticed, the hub connectors come in 3 colours.
1. Blue: Supports USB3.0
2. White: Supports USB3.0 charging
3. Red: Charging Port. Only supports charging
