Strange DHCP entry

We are running two DHCP Servers in a split scope scenario.  One DHCP server is Running Windows 2K8 R2 SP1, the other is still running Win 2K3 R2 (Yes I know, soon it will be gone). Occasionally we will see a client with a strange Host name, the strange entry takes form the same way every time, regardless of the client computer that is being effected.  Instead of 'hostname.example.com,' the hostmane section is replaced by the word 'dash.'  So the entry is 'dash.example.com.'

I have been unable to find any information on Microsoft's site, and Google searches return very little.  We have 8 day leases defined for this particular scope, additionally it is a scope that only provides IP's to wired computers.

Any information on this would be appreciated.

Download and run an ip scanner to get more info.

Does it show the mac address?  If so can you trace that on your switches or ping the device?
