needing reviews for http://www.carparts.com/

Hello and Good Evening Everyone,

I have a van which is in need of parts.  Seeing that I am on a tight budget, I wish to save as much money as possible.  My nephew ran across this site http://www.carparts.com/ which offers new parts at very discounted prices.  In many ways, the prices seem almost too good to be true.   As such, I am wondering how customers overall rate their satisfaction with parts purchased from this company.  Could someone offer some feedback which reflect customer satisfaction/dissatisfaction about carparts.com?

            Thank you

            George

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I took a look at a couple of parts and they were 3rd party replacement parts - that is, not new name brand (Ford, Volvo, etc.) parts but new or remanufactured parts made by a 3rd party supplier. None that I look at said warranty approved.

So I would be concerned for quality and reliability.

Hello and Good Evening John,

Thank you for looking into this.  The two links I reviewed are one for a fuel pump at https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.carparts.com%2Fdetails%2FChevrolet%2FAstro%2FReplacement%2FFuel_Pump%2F1997%2FREPC314510.html%3FTID%3Dgglpla%26origin%3Dpla%26gclid%3DCMi_jfv6zMgCFdgWgQod1WQD2Q&h=5AQGJExms   and one for a window motor at https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.carparts.com%2Fresults%2F%3FNtt%3Dwindow%2Bmotor%26searchType%3Dglobal%26N%3D0%26uts%3Dtrue%26shopId%3D1&h=jAQEkI4pW  Both ads indicate the condition of these parts to be new.   I am not sure about their other merchandise.   At any rate, could you take a look at these two and share your thoughts about those?

              Thank you

I looked at the first one. It specifically avoids saying it is a Chevrolet (GM) part. It just says it is a new part for your model of vehicle. I would say almost for certain it is not a GM part, and so you do not know the quality or reliability of the part.

The original auto parts with warranty are usually a lot more expensive than replacement, up to 10 times more, depending by what part do you need.
If you want cheap, then you have options: either you buy a second hand, used original part from a garage in town, either a new replacement, but not original branded.
Based on my experience, when I used to repair the car by myself looking for cheap alternative, I used to do next:
- I got always the service manual/user manual of the car. I have read few days about the repairing what I had to do. I have read on the specific forum car the similar problem and how was solved by them. Always is important to speak with the people which went through the same problem and had the same car or very similar model, it is very helpful for different hints.
- When the job was impossible to be done by me in the garage, then I went always to a service and they installed the needed part and they have done the job. It was always very expensive, but sometimes there is no other way around. The parts installed were not always the original brand, but sometimes a replacement. I did not care as long as the service offered warranty for the work.
- My opinion is that you do not have to buy always the original branded parts, but the replacement should be a known manufacturer branded. Do not  buy unknown made parts. Find the manufacturers name for that specific part, see what are the people saying about it on specific forum, check if that part is sold on several auto-parts sellers online. You may ask also a local garage in your town for their opinion and from where they buy the parts.

Hello and Good Morning Everyone,

Thanks so much for your shared opinions to my concern.  After reading and re-reading everyone's feedback, I certainly agree on both sides of this issue.  It is almost a 50/50 or split viewpoint.  At any rate, I have decided to go ahead and give carparts.com a try because I am in need of an inexpensive solution to this dilemma.  Besides, this van has a past of having mechanical issues which makes me less inclined to continue dumping a whole lot of money into it.  If carparts.com does not work out, it will not be a big loss.  However, I am confident everything will be just fine.

In closing, I want to give a big thank you to Viki for all of the resourceful links given in addition to the candid opinions posted in reply to my question.  I can tell you certainly did much research and leg work here.  You feedback certainly provides a comprehensive picture of carparts.com by addressing the pros and cons from a customer's perspective.  Additionally, your feedback also points to other online dealers which sell automotive parts and accessories at affordable rates which certainly helps to keep my options open.

Thanks again everyone for your help.
