Windows 8 Product Key UEFI Preinstalled PC Issues

Help Everyone!

Laptop.. Windows 8 preinstalled.. Hard Drive DEAD. UEFI Bios has Windows 8 embedded. I was able to recover that key with 3rd party tools BUT it will not allow activation with OEM Windows 10 or 8.1 DVD's. Im out of ideas. What other options exist besides buying a new key.

Any Ideas?

What media are you using for the reinstall?

Unless you have already activated this hardware with a successful Windows 10 upgrade Win10 installation media will not work.

When installing to a UEFI enabled system do not enter a key manually when requested.  If Windows is given a key it will not look for an embedded one and embedded keys cannot be used for manual activation.

There are a few UEFI OEM systems that will only activate with Win 8.0 media matching the original install but it is very unlikley yours is in this group.

Just out of interest how are you extracting the embedded key?

You cannot install 8.1 or 10 with a win8 key. But you can install 8.1 using these generic keys
Windows 8.1 Pro: GCRJD-8NW9H-F2CDX-CCM8D-9D6T9
Windows 8.1 Core (="Home"): 334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT
Note: they are official. You can install with them but you cannot activate those. For activation, change them to your key, first.

As mentioned already, either get the corresponding version of Windows 8. Windows 8.1 won't work, Or use the recovery USB stick you made when you got the PC and restore the system from that. Or order recovery media from the PC manufacturer.
