how to make a pdf page editable on Mac

I have a pdf file containing only one page. Its a form so i want to fill it and save for myself.
I tried converting the pdf to doc format but when i open it in pages it appears all haphazard .
How can i convert it properly so as to edit and save it.

Also in windows we have Microsoft word. Is there something similar or as powerful in Mac OS ?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The latest release, Adobe Reader DC allows me to fill and sign pdf's. Save often and in increments. i.e. as you go along, pdf1, pdf2, pdf3... as my pdf simply disappeared on me.
