"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The license you get with Windows Server 2012 Standard allows you to install up to 2 virtual machines. Datacenter allows for unlimited virtual machines.

The key that is given should have a MAK key that you can use up to 45 times. After that you need to call Microsoft if you need to use that key to activate (or there might be other ways of adding more activations to it). But an activation doesn't equate to licensed. You still need to limit it to 1 host and/or 2 virtual machines for Standard.

If you have Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter and your VMs are also running 2012 R2, you can use Automatic Virtual Machine Activation:
