.Net 4 will not install on a Windows 7 Home Premium

I can't get .net 4 to install on a Windows 7 Home Premium edition. The install start and gets to 100% but then it hangs. Any ideas would be helpful.

if setup shows 100 % success but still will not finish, it is often a second (hidden) messagebox waiting for answer. this problem is a known issue since the early times of windows os but never was solved sufficiently.

to find out whether this applies in your case, you may first look in the taskbar whether there is a second icon right of setup icon. if yes, use it to bring the window (messagebox) into top.

if not, you may minimize all open windows by WIN+D or WIN+M. after this, click on the setup icon again and if a waiting messagebox is the problem, it should now come to foreground.

if nothing helped, invoke the taskmanager and find out the status of the setup task. if it is '... not responding', check whether there is a process taking much cpu-time (if you have multiple cores, check if one core is used intensively. if yes, it is a good chance that there is a task or thread which is running infinitely.

last chance is to kill the task and reboot. perhaps the setup has succeeded or will succeed after repeating the installation.

It's possible that the installation is finished anyway. I saw that a couple of time. Go to the Programs applets in Control Panel. If Microsoft .NET Framework 4 is in there, with a possible extra wording afterward (such as Targeting Pack), the installation is probably OK.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I have tried all your suggestions without success.  I even tried ninite pro to do the install. Ninite Pro says that the install failed because it could not be verified. .net 4 does not show up in the installed program list.

Did you get your installation from Microsoft or from another source? I have seen reports of bad copies of the installation circulating in a few placed. They do not cause problems (no virus or the likes), but are missing something that prevents the installation from completing.

Okay, you can close this question. I let the computer run for 1 hour and 45 minutes and the install completed. I have no idea what happened.

there are many good answers in this thread which might be helpful for anyone who has a similar issue. since the setup finally was complete, i don't see a reason for deleting the question but recommend for an equal split between the participants.
