Looking for a home security camera system...

Hello all,

I was able to help the police because my security camera was in the right place to capture a criminal in the act of breaking in to my neighbor's home. Fortunately, the neighbor was just arriving home, so the criminal ran before stealing anything.

Anyhow because my wife was so proud that my video may help to identify the criminal, she has green lighted my wish for a better security camera with higher resolution.

But there are so many choices!

Currently, I have a basic $350.00 4 channel LAView LV-KDV1402B6BP with terrible 600TVL camera resolution. I'm not so keen about LAView because my unit has been rather problematic over the past year and AFAIK they never offer software or firmware updates.

Ideally, I am looking for:
- 1080 resolution.
- The ability to use both wired and IP cameras (4 channel is all I require).
- Excellent software control (both over browser and iPhone app).
- Remote connection for viewing outside the home (over secure connection).
- Automatic Email with picture or video attachments.
- Must be a stand-alone box (like the LAView).

...and under $800

Super bonus (but pie in sky)... a video recorder system that also functions as a wireless (wireless sensors for doors/windows) home security. Does anything like this exist?

Thank you,

I wear a lot of hats...

Thanks for your suggestion (and so sorry about the late response).

I'm not certain that I am comfortable with spending money on an unknown (off-brand) system with unknown and likely non-existent support (but I'm open to your thoughts).

Also, I don't think this system supports both wired and wireless 1080p cameras. It's hard to determine from an eBay ad and my inquiry to the manufacturer (U.S. division) has gone unanswered (3 weeks)... that's a red flag. :(

Thanks again.
Good luck on this one. The type of manufacturer you prefer would either be cost prohibitive or just not available to the average person. The brands that make the products readily available for the average person aren't necessarily the best on the customer service side. Q-See might be comparatively good in this part of the field, but they are by no means perfect either. I like Night Owl equipment, but they don't make sensors for windows and doors. Never had to deal with their support, so the products have treated me well.

So sorry for the very late response.

I ended up compromising *again* and switched over to a 1080p wired-only system by Lorex.

Overall, I think their desktop software is marginally better than the LAView software and the mobile app (iPhone) is vastly superior to the LAView app.

Unfortunately, the motion detection aspect of their software is error prone and seemingly unreliable. Currently, it's not detecting and recording any motion. Grrr... although their support is better than LAView.

Additionally, I am still looking for an integrated camera and overall home security system. It would be nice to have an all in one system that supports:
- IP cameras
- Wired cameras
- Magnetic door and windows sensors
- IR motion detection

--- all in one app.

I am surprised that no one seems to have done this yet. :(
Swann used to make a series of products, but discontinued them. Some of the remaining ones from other brands come with catches, like monitoring services.
