Outlook Exchange email disapearing

Not the first time this happens but always the same user:
He creates an email to send to a few people and sent it.

It gets stuck in his outbox... Still showing "Connected to Exchange"

He closes outlook and go back in it and the email is gone.... not showing in "Sent Item" and not showing also on my exchange 2003  Message Tracking Center...???

try telnet exchange from users machine & see if it connects, that will help you to figure out may be it could be a issue with the network.

What exchange version you are on? how big is the OST?

I did not try owa and since the problem cleared with an Outlook restart I cannot.  But it was showing "Connected to MS Exchange" so it's not because it was out of connection and even if it was, theres no way the email would vanish just because he is "offline"...
I will recreate its ost files just in case it a corruption.
tx!
ideally in that case it should have saved the item in drafts. Not sure whats happening. May be it was a freeze condition where the outlook said connected but actually on the background it was not.
The problem did not reapear so it's hard to try to trouble shoot. I will close it but thansk for the ideas
