Website Migration

I'm currently building a new website for a client. They are currently hosting their site with another hosting company, however they will be changing their hosting over to us when the site is ready to go live.

Our client uses Google Business Apps (GBA) for their email and a few other systems, such as their accounts package etc rely on their current setup.

What is the best way to approach this migration. Should we just add the DNS records to the new development server, including Google Mail MX records, so that when we point the nameserver over to the new server, everything will be in place?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I woudl start by getting a list of all current dns records for their domain. At this point it depends what the plan is - are you hosting the domain and website, or just the website?

If you are hosting the domain as well then ensure you setup the dns records for the domain to match the current setup but just change the relevant A host record for the website to point to your server. (Note the client would need to be aware they may lose some access to systems during the transition).

If you are not hosting the domain then the client just needs to change the A host record for the website to point to your web server's IP. (This should only affect website access during the transition).
