"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Just to clarify, is the server has domain controller role enabled? if so, how come it's member server?  this should be a DC?

You just want to demote this server or you need the other roles (file server, application server) to be migrated to other server?

If this server with roles no longer required then 1) If it is a member server - Remove from domain, remove the roles, clear dns entries. 2) If this is a DC - dcpromo to demote the dc, metadata cleanup, manaully remove dns entries, remove other roles etc.

Using the wrong terminology can result in wrong information.

If your 2003 server is a DC, then it's NOT a member server - the two are mutually exclusive.

You need to run DCPROMO on the 2003 server and demote the domain controller TO a member server.  Then you can just remove it from the network and delete the computer account (after you've moved all it's services to other servers, of course).
