Determine volume of email sent to customers

Hi - I got a question from a web developer related to the volume of email sent to customers accessing our website. I know it is a broad subject but to be honest I don't know where to start. For example, if a user creates an account through the website, she/he receives an email from If I look in that mailbox's 'Sent Items' on the Exchange server, there is no mention of that email. How would one trace these emails that are triggered automatically from the website?

Thank you for your help

Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Your server should keep a mail log of all activity generated by script/process.

How would I check that on a server running IIS 7?

If the emails are flowing thru your Exchange infrastructure, then you can analyze Exchange's Message Tracking Logs.

Do the emails get directly sent thru Exchange or is there an intermediary SMTP relay somewhere?  You could also analyze those logs.

You will need a list of destination email addresses (registered user emails) to start.  Then with a little PowerShell you could generate a report.
