How to make USB keys secure with passwords

I have a bunch of USB Keys we give to our new workers and i think this is dangerous if they don't use a software with password to protect any docs, etc. stored in those storage devices.

Can you please advice which will be the most secure way to do it and which software i should use on those USB Keys?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You can also use BitLockerToGo to encrypt the drive. It's free and you can apply GPO. Here is a nice TechNet article.

Addition: Truecrypt should not be used since it has unfixed security problems with its driver.
