Calculating length of text in Excel

Hi,

I'm having trouble calculating the length of a text in Excel. All cells contain underscores, and when I input the formula I always get the same result, 10.

=len(A1)

These are two sample texts that I have:

CM_Allergy
CM_Allergy_Reaction

Could the underscore be affecting the result? The first text is 10 characters in length so I first thought that the cell reference was not being incremented, but I checked and all references are correct. Any ideas?

Thanks

Update: I just found a button "Calculate Now". It works now, is there a setting that can calculate upon changing the cell instead of having to click this button? I am using Microsoft Office Standard 2010.

Follow these steps...

Formulas Tab --> Calculation Options --> Set it to Automatic.
It should be set to Manual right now as per your description.
