MVC5 Need Attribute to print error message, but allow blank

doing MVC 5 c#

I have a attribute in a MetadataType  the column is Money (decimal)  It okay to be null (blank) if not it must be a number

        [Required(ErrorMessage = "Enter costs in dollars with the the ($) dollar sign")]
        [Display(Name = "Cost Amount To Date")]
        public Nullable<decimal> CostToDate { get; set; }

This forces required,   but blank should be acceptable, but if entry is made it must be number.

Any help is appreciated

Please forgive me for being Captain Obvious, but if you accept blank, then it's not a required field.

Because you are requiring the user to enter the $ symbol--which BTW, doesn't seem like good UX--I think you'll probably want to use the RegularExpression attribute with a pattern of:

Open in new window

If you choose to use this, then you'll need to remove the Required attribute.
