I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

As a VMware Admin, you need to check the performance charts in Vcenter console.
Check the cpu, memory usage on servers. If you think it is high check the load on each host and how much is remaining after getting used.
Also check the storage, atleast 10% free space should be available on each storage.
Moreover due to high usage of storage it may be possible that the performance of VM may degrade, so kindly move the VM and storage to different host and examine the performance.
Hope this is kind of initial troubleshooting steps which you can check.

Also ensure that systems that have lots of network activity are all not on the same host (this is if you have multiple hosts).
