find substring

In php I have a string inputted as a mathematical function like
$a='5 X (3+4)=35';
or the string could be
$a='5 X 3X4=60';

how do I display this string without the =sign like '5 X (3+4)=';

Let me see if I understand. You are trying to input a function and set a variable with that string so you get the result?.

Why in first place you enter the whole operation with result as string?. Are you trying to build a calculator or something like that?

To display a string without the "="...

echo str_replace("=","",$string);
