Active Directory: domain controllers

Hello,

Would like some suggestion :

If there are 6 physical domain controllers with all new hardware in global data center for about 10000 users,  should this be sufficient.

Thanks.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Without knowing much about your environment, it is hard to answer the question..  Have you considered virtualizing your DCs and my next question would be, how do your users connect to the resources in the data center?  DCs should be placed closest to where the authentication happens and if you have users in different sites, you should have DC in those sites.

For a good educated answer, I recommend you perform a sizing operation and for that, refer to link below:

The regional sites have 2 physical dc.  In addition to the dc in regional sites, we have dc in global data center. There are no plans to virtualize

What resources are at the Data Center and how do the users connect to them (i.e. are you running Citrix, desktop virtualization, Exchange, etc.).  I am asking these questions trying to understand as to why you have 6 DCs at your data center.  Ensure to have two DCs configured as GC and that at least one DC at each site is configured as GC.

All dc are gc.  We have close to 5000 users in the same location the data center is located. There is a dual 10gb pipe between this location and data center.

Why haven't you done any load testing to see if it's enough for your environment?  Capacity depends on how your environment is configured and what services it's running... 6 DCs for 10K users sounds fine... or not... really depends on what systems are talking to AD and what policies you have defined that cause systems to talk to AD... TEST YOUR OWN NETWORK - we can't do it for you.  I will say that USUALLY, I'd place DCs at sites with more than 25 users... So unless you only have 3 sites or 1000 different sites, I'd probably have more DCs.
