outlook search indexing not working

Using Outlook 2010 (fully upto date)

Search was working fine until recently, so I used the 'Rebuild index' option as I have done successfully in the past.
The problem is that it never seems to finish indexing, even after leaving it for many days.

The index count always seems to change; for example sometimes there could be 1800 items left, then it jumps to 2800, but it never finishes.

Any ideas?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Do a Repair of Office from Control Panel. Restart and start Indexing again.

Another thing to try is correct a corrupt cache.

Go to

control panel > mail (32bit) > email accounts > change > use cached exchange mode.
