VMware versus virtual box

I am creating a lab to do live exercise on server 2012 I created one in VMware but I'm having trouble see WMware network issue is there an equal software to VMware (I know there are, but on some of them people say it's not a comparison to VMware, is it so? Even if, what are the difference it may not matter to serve my purpose).
I have reason to believe that virtual box is more powerful than the free version of VMWARE as they have VMware places restrictions on features in the free version because they want to push to upgrade to their paid version verses virtual box being an open source non for profit, will include all their features in the free version, but its only my assuming, what do you say based on your actual experience?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

VMware Workstation Pro 12.0 every time, performance, features, pedigree, support.

You cannot compare VMware Player (free) with Oracle Virtualbox, it's a different product. e.g. cut down version of VMware Workstation Pro 12.0).

Performance of the hypervisor, is the same in VMware Player and VMware Workstation, which performs marginally better than Oracle Virtualbox.

(Off topic) - please post your issues, in the other thread, I'm not discussing your Internet issues here!

Do not blame the tools, e.g. the Hypervisor!

I'm sorry but the issue you have with the previous question, has got nothing to do with the Hypervisor, you chose to select, but the configuration of your network and Virtual Machines and Windows 2012 OS.

The same issue would occur, if the VMs were physical.

Yes. I have VMware Workstation for year. The Network Editor supplied in VMware Workstation (not in Player) is worth the cost. The polish over the years (V12 is a very polished product) is also worth the cost.

Player is included with Workstation if you wish to use it.

Top of Class, simply put.

After installing the pro trial version, is there a way to reverse beck to the free workstation (if I don't have use of its extra features?)

Workstation is not free, but worth every penny. If you want something different (Standalone VMware Player or Virtual Box), you need to uninstall Workstation. Workstation and Free VMware Player cannot co-exist on the same machine.

Currently I have "workstation" 12 player free (not pro) I believe a Purchase of pro will update my current version to pro and add its features. without reinstalling a current machines I have on VM. am I correct?
And If I do want to go back to the free version after the trial period can I uninstall the pro version go install the free and import beck the Vmachine (or will the machines in VM be upgraded to the pro version and not compatible anymore with the free workstation version? (Maybe should I back up the vmachines now on a external hard drive)
PS I believe it will not be needed I rely on your knowledge and experience but I want to take some extra caution.

There is no Workstation Free. What you have is VMware Player V12 and that is free.

You can update to VMware Workstation but you will need to uninstall VMware Player. Your guest machines will continue to work well. It is always a good idea to back up just to be sure. But I upgrade from version to version with no issue.

Some of my machines go back as far as VMware Workstation V1. (Yes ONE)

VMware Workstation is provided as evaluation software....

You evaluate it, and decide to purchase or uninstall it and stop using it. After the evaluation has expired, you will not be able to power on VMs using Workstation. They will work with the only FREE Player product.

All VMware virtual machines are compatible with products across the VMware product range.

Thanks. What you show there is Player and it is Free. It can create machines, but has minimalist features. Decent for most use, but I prefer Workstation with all the features.
