RICOH Aficio MP 161 firmware

Have a printer no longer under contract which needs a firmware upgrade. Ricoh is asking a ridiculous amount of money to download and install. Anyone know how to go about getting firmware upgrades for a RICOH Aficio MP 161

My first question is: why do you need a firmware upgrade? Is there a new feature you require, or a bug you want to fix? If there are new features, then Ricoh may feel they are entitled to charge for them.

I am not in favour of installing printer firmware, just because it's there.

we replaced a sbs2003 server to 2012R2, in order for the scanner software to work RICOH said the firmware needs to be updated. Considering the technology gap between 2003 and 2012 this makes sense. What I'm not happy about is a tech showing up uncertain what needs to be done and billing for 2 - 3 hours at a crazy rate.

It takes about 30 minutes to update the firmware, but I am not sure that a 161 will work with server 2012 even with the latest firmware.
2012 defaults to SMB3, which is not supported on older Ricohs.
You could install FTP server and use scan to FTP instead.
You can use the builtin ftp server, or the Filezilla free one.

If we follow your approach you can answer questions all day and expect points.

Others, including myself except points when we provide a valid solution.

If the points are this important for such a useless answer maybe the administrator will give them to you.

Sorry, I also don't pay for services in the free market if there's not a solid resolution...kind of the same thing. Your thoughts.
