surface and 2 monitors

I have a Microsoft surface with 8.1 on it.  I have attached a 2nd monitor to the surface.  I am duplicating screens. This works fine but when I am in a program like Excel and I move my mouse a few times to the lower left hand side of the screen the external monitor goes completely white and I have to reboot to get it back.  FYI.  I have a surface cover on the surface that I keep closed at all times.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Install Surface and Windows updates
Check power saving settings to "never" for the monitor.
Also check the cable and connections are not loose for the 2nd monitor.
