Serial Port Diagnostics

We have a program that uses a Virtual Serial Port (USB to Serial) to do I/O. We just had the occasion where the device came in at COM7 and when we used putty to try and access that serial port putty said the port was already in use and couldn't be opened. We tried using process explorer to see what had the port open but couldn't find anything.

Is there a program anyone knows of that will go in and  find all serial ports on a computer and display what has it open? We have hit this before and I think it was Kaspersky that had all the serial ports tied up but I can't be sure.

Afaik AV does not hook into COM ports. Depending on the Virtual Serial Port driver, the ports are not really fixed. So I would start by looking into the device manager.

Finding the ComPort number is not the issue. Device manager will display that. The Comport does stay fixed as long as you don't unplug it from one USB port and plug it in to another. The problem is that some piece of software as all the comport "open" so we can't access the device no matter what the Comport number is.
