Gmail Free account if full

My GF Gmail account is full. It is storing too many messages and I need to clear them out. This is because her phone has limited capacity.
what options do I have ? What recommendation everyone can give me? what is the best practice ?

this is more info: "My iphone has about 6GB of storage. I got a msg today that I am almost maxed out. I went to settings 1.3G is used by my email. I need to reduce that. I tried today and did not succeed. I did succeed though in changing the default for deleted megs to really delete msgs and no more archive. But I have so many msgs in the archive ALL Mail. I deleted them for an hour, and then they all showed up again. I think I have to delete them on the server. or Change a setting on the server.

How should I approach this scenario ?

Thank you

Hi,

If these are important e-mails you can connect her account on a PC and download all e-mails first for a backup. You then need to connect via webmail and delete the messages, else they will keep coming back.

Thank you.

Sikhumbuzo. so I should reverse the process. instead of deleting the email from the device, I should delete them directly into the server logging in to it using webmail ? Correct ?
Sikhumbuzo NtsadaIT AdministrationCommented:
Yes that is correct - the setup on the phone is an IMAP - which just synchronises with Webmail and does not delete messages from the server.

ohhh this is a very good point that you are explaining and I want to make sure that I understand it clearly. this is why when she deleted her email for an hour from archive all mail they later came back ?

because she really never deleted from the server correct ?

That is correct.

Check the account settings in your mail client. In Thunderbird for example, if you select "Account Settings", and then "Synchronization and Storage", you can disable "Keep messages for this account on this Computer". There are also other tweaks you can change in the synchronization settings. There is also a setting which allows you to synchronize only the most recent messages. IMAP has the advantage that you don't have to download the whole mailbox from the server, which Pop would do. So long as you have a connection to the internet, you can read your mails without synchronizing and using up local disk space.

I don't know what mail client your device is using, but it should also have similar options you can set, and maybe there is even an iOS version of thunderbird...

RIndi she is using Gmail and and I phone. do you know where these synchronization settings are in an iphone ? thank you..
rindiCommented:
No, I don't use "i-crap" stuff, so I have no idea where such a setting would be.
