Geo metro engine swap

I own a 1992 Geo Metro xfi 2 dr 1.0L 5 speed. I would like to replace my engine with a 1.0 L engine from a 1997 Geo Metro.

Are the two engines compatible? What challenges would I have putting the 1997 engine in my 1992 metro?

You should be ok.  GM uses the same engines for a log time.

What I would do would be to go to a GM dealership, go to the parts department and have them print out the "picture sheets" of the engines of both years of cars.

Compare the two and see how close they match.

Also if you have access to the '97 Metro engine take some measurements and see if the bolt patterns match up to your car.

Incorrect. ( The second generation Metro featured two engine options )

1992 is First generation Geo Metro
1995-2001 are Second generation Geo Metro (This generation also offered a revised 1.3 litre inline four-cylinder engine)

If the replacement engine is the three-cylinder, 1.0 litre throttle body injected engine, for non-LSi models it will fit...if not then it will not fit without major system upgrades.
