MPLS Networks

We are giving consideration to implementing an MPLS network for our 3 locations.  Do any of you currently use MPLS networking for multiple locations?  Who hosts your network?   Any pros or cons you would like to share?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

We use MPLS at about 20 sites, great solution, provider is Centurylink.  Only negative is that you don't have control over the carrier part of the network.  But I am going to assume you are bank by your name.

With that in mind, you may also consider metro Ethernet.  You will control the routing and if you plan to encrypt the communications between sites, it may be preferred.  Once you encrypt on your end you will lose the QoS tagging.

Keep in mind that an MPLS is only as good as the carrier tech implementing.  While intended to be secure it would not be impossible for a miss configuration by the carrier to allow your sensitive data to bleed or be snooped.  That is why I would strongly suggest establishing VPN tunnels over the MPLS and encrypting all the traffic.

This will help you understanding the comparison. We are using it on number of sites - sometimes latency is an issues where we had faster IPSec VPN over high speed internet connections.

Notice some info about MPLS;
- MPLS provides a mechanism for engineering network traffic patterns that is independent of routing tables.
- MPLS assigns short labels to network packets that describe how to forward them via the network.
- MPLS is independent of any routing protocol and can be used for unicast packets.
- In an MPLS environment, the analysis of the packet header is performed just once, when a packet enters the MPLS cloud
We use MPLS cloud; in order to connect our multiple location. We went with MPLS-based network because it gives us a complete control over our WAN, Improve disaster recovery, easily reconnect to backup locations if needed and applications can be re-routed, greater high availability,
Performance and most importantly for us was that we significantly reduce capital and operating costs.
