Wordpress install

I am trying to install WordPress on Windows 7 Professional (64-bit).   I tried setting up with XAMPP and was getting an error "object not found" when browsing to http://localhost/wp.
I read quite a few posts that mentioned many causes, including one indicating it is better to use WAMP. However I was getting the same error after trying WAMP as well.  I would prefer to use XAMPP if possible.  Any ideas or feedback which method is better running Wordpress on Windows 7 (64-bit) ?  And also any potential ideas on resolving the object not found error.  I had all of the services running.   Thanks for any info.
