Numbering/Printing Pages from Crystal Reports Crosstab

Greetings!  I have a crosstab in the Report Footer of my Crystal Report in Crystal Reports 2013.  The crosstab will often span multiple pages both horizontally and vertically.  Right now, Crystal numbers the pages as follows (assume 3 horizontal pages and 2 vertical pages for this example):

1 1 1
2 2 2

The client would like the numbering (and the printing, in a PDF for example) to be:
1 3 5
2 4 6

The formula I want to use for page number is:
((horizontal_page_number - 1) * TotalPageCount) + PageNumber

However, I cannot reliably get horizontal_page_number.  There was another thread where a similar question was posted 5 years ago, but the solution there does not work.  It involved putting a formula into the HorizontalPageNumber field (in the Suppress or Display String formulas) to set a global variable to the value of the Horizontal Page Number field itself, and then using the global variable in another formula.  Seems like it should work, but it does not.  The global variable is not picked up by the new formula.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

This question has been posed in the past in various forms.

To date we have not found a way to reliably number the pages.

What question did you look at?  Can you provide a link to it?

Looking at your display you want the left page in all horizontal t be numbered first 1-n then the second horizontal page numbered n+1 - 2n, etc.

Are there pages other than the cross-tab?

There are no pages other than the ones produced by the cross-tab, no.  I posted a new question here because the other question was 5 years old and the marked solution did not work.
