massive number of DNS queries on old domain name

One of my customers, whom I shall call coolname.com previously had dumbname.com.  dumbname.com has not been active or advertised in a long time. I currently don't resolve DNS for it, though GoDaddy says I'm the authority.

I get hundreds of queries for that name at a time.  Then ... nothing about it for an hour or so ... then hundreds again.

Is this an attack?  Should I set up a CNAME record for dumbname to alias coolname?  Or set Apache to do a 301 redirect?

Thanks!

The ones that start with '74' and '173' are from Google and some of the others may also be search engines.  They undoubtedly have old links that they are trying to scan which is why you are seeing the requests.  I believe you can only do the 301 redirect After a connection to the site is made.  But since it doesn't exist, you can't do that.

So ... should I go ahead and resolve the query and then use Apache to issue the 301?
Dave BaldwinFixer of ProblemsCommented:
That sounds right but I've never had to do that...
