separate two active directory network

Hi All,

I have two sites connected using VPN site to site ( site1and site2)   the network contains four domain controllers in single active directory domain and two exchange 2007 servers, each site contains two DC and one Exchange 2007 server, all the mail sending and receiving is through site 1, now I plan to split the two network as both of them will be totally separate network , can someone advise if its fine to disconnect the site to site and configure site 2 to send and receive emails using local FW in site 2.

Thanks

Are they part of the same forest?  If so then you need connectivity for AD to function.

I would suggest, try same with simulated environments first, in VMWare in following manner.

What I understood is:

Site 1 ------ VPN Connection ------- Site 2
DC1                                                    DC3
DC2                                                    DC4
Exchange 1                                       Exchange 2

on each site you have 2 domain controllers and one exchange server 2007.

You wants to disjoin VPN Connectivity / Communication with proper functionality of AD and Exchange Servers.

Do following:

1. Promote one more additional Active Directory on both sites and make them GC
2.Get downtime on both sites:
3. Check where you have GC configured and FSMO PDC Role Installed on old ADs
4. Disable the VPN connectivity.

Now each sites have 3 ADs and 1 Exchange Server but logically its having 6 ADs and 2 Exchange Servers

Site 1 ------  x Disabled VPN Connection x ------- Site 2
DC1                                                                            DC3
DC2                                                                            DC4
DC5 (GC)                                                                   DC6 (GC)
Exchange 1                                                               Exchange 2

5. Now make DC2 and DC4 as Global Catlog (GC) too.

Site 1 ------  x Disabled VPN Connection x ------- Site 2
DC1                                                                            DC3
DC2 (GC)                                                                    DC4 (GC)
DC5 (GC)                                                                    DC6 (GC)

Exchange 1                                                                Exchange 2

6. On site 1:
Transfer or seize the FSMO Roles as per requirements
Perform Metadata for DC3, DC4 and DC6

7. On site 2:
Transfer or seize the FSMO Roles as per requirements
Perform Metadata for DC1, DC2 and DC5

8. Reboot both exchange servers on each site, you need to configure diffrent OWA URL Links.

Remember GC redundancy is very important for proper functionality of Exchange Server.

I would suggest, try same with simulated environments first, in VMWare.
