The microphone built into my laptop is not great

mine also not good. I always confuse with selecting and setting up that. Says use both mike and microphone etc in setting. Any good link to figure that and test it out?

I want start with free ones for time being.

I have to choose between

(2) CamStudio is free, open source software at SourceForge:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/camstudio/

It allows recording all screen and audio activity, creating industry-standard AVI video files. It also has a built-in streaming Flash producer to convert the AVIs into SWFs. If you have any problems with it, take a look at the Issues section at its own website:
http://camstudio.org/

(3) FFVideo is also free, open source software at SourceForge:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffvideo/

Just use Control Panel, Sound and make sure your Microphone is connected and the sound is working. Test in Control Panel.

I strongly suggest a good microphone or your produced file will not be good.

i was checking above and lot of advertisements and lot of unnecessary download links, buttons. Not sure which button to click. please advise
For CamStudio, don't download it from Cnet or from any other site. Download it from its own site:
http://camstudio.org/

Click the big green Download button there. It will download a single file called <camstudio.exe>. I haven't installed it recently, but if it offers any other software in addition to CamStudio, decline it. As a side comment, I don't download anything from Cnet these days.

For FFVideo, this link will download <FFVideo.zip>:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffvideo/files/latest/download

I scanned <camstudio.exe> and <FFVideo.zip> with the latest versions and up-to-date databases of both MSE and MBAM — both scans came up clean. I believe they're safe, but you'll have to make that decision for yourself. Regards, Joe
Yes I get that as well and since I just installed Cam Studio with the loss less codec on my other system yesterday definitely only use the sourceforge that is MSI installer.
I get blocked using this web page as well>http://camstudio.org/
Use this one
http://sourceforge.net/projects/camstudio/
and get the lossless codec from here download and install first to the same folder then install Cam studio
http://camstudio.org/
Setup cam studio to use Lossless codec in the Options>video options
and set the audio
now set the keyboard shortcuts to use F8 start/pause F9 to stop
Options>program options don't let it play once you stop as this can cause a crash disable that, below

Green button with DOWNLOAD at the middle towards bottom? Not that link below though right?
NEW APPROACH! Since the product is free, the author may be making money by offering to install other products, for which he gets paid. Most authors who do this have the installer allow you to decline all of the other software, but I don't know if that's the case with CamStudio. A search at the CamStudio forum turns up some disturbing threads:
http://camstudio.org/forum/search?Search=malware

Indeed, when I ran the <camstudio.exe> installer, MBAM detected PUPs. I did not proceed to see if the installer allows not installing the PUPs. So I recommend a different approach — use the installer at SourceForge:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/camstudio/files/latest/download

I ran this and here's the first dialog:

It then offers three optional products, each with a dialog:

DECLINE all of them! After declining the last optional product, you will get the install wizard just for CamStudio and it will be the only product installed. I just did it — no problems! Regards, Joe

i installed camstudio but when i recor audio not working even though video is fine. I selected  'select audio from Microphone' but not working.

Look in Control Panel, Sound, Recording tab. What do you see?  That is where I set up sound for Camtasia.
You may need to check you have enabled stereo mix
Rightclick the the speaker icon on the taskbar then recording devices, rightclick anywhere and tick to show disabled and disconnected devices you should see stereo mix now apply and ok

It's probably just a matter of picking the right microphone option (assuming, of course, that your microphone hardware is working). Try this:

Options
Audio Options
Audio Options for Microphone
Click Audio Capture Device drop-down.

You'll see something like this:

On my system, both Default input device and External Mic work fine (of course, I have an external mic plugged in). Try all of the drop-down choices it shows — one of them is bound to work for you, if you have working microphone hardware. Regards, Joe

i doubt my hardware works or not. Earlier i tried tried and gave up. But when i purchase techsmith that time which did work with that soft ware though.

How do i test my hard ware?
There's a very simple sound recorder app built into W7. You may get to it via:

All Programs
Accessories
Sound Recorder

This is an easy way to test if your mic hardware is working. Another way to test it is:

Control Panel
Sound
Recording

Each recording device will have a sound meter showing green bars going up and down as you speak into the mic:

the problem with my laptop is upgraded from winows vista to windows 7. some drivers something messed up. i will double check
Yes, drivers can be a huge issue on any OS upgrade. In particular, I have found the audio driver and the laptop touchpad driver to be the two most problematic when upgrading the OS. For example, when I installed the Windows 10 Technical Preview on a laptop, the only two drivers that I had to manually install were Realtek audio and Synaptics touchpad. There's a good chance that your upgrade from Vista to W7 needs a new audio driver in order to get your microphone working. Regards, Joe
Did you enable the stereomix first then select the default device in Cam Studio?
Do you see the stereomix?
Are you seeing an error message? such as WaveoutGetSelectControl()failed. after you have enabled record audio?
It means that CamStudio (for whatever reason) isn't able to find the line needed to record audio from the speaker and then generates that error message.
I have seen this happen with laptops and the mic line shared with the speakers.
One Way to get round this if it is the same problem was to install virtual sound recorder called Total Recorder, it has a fully functioning trail you can test
http://www.totalrecorder.com/capture_sound.htm
costs only 17.95
http://www.totalrecorder.com/productfr_tr.htm
Check if your sound card has a control panel

Do a test gudii9
Look in the recording tab and make the mic default.  Right click it make default
You should see those green bars indicating levels are active.
Go to properties to adjust volume
If those green bars are not showing at all, may I ask what type of mic is it?
Is is a mic or a headset with mic?
Are you using the speakers inbuilt into your laptop.
Just so I cam see in my head what are you referring to> and other people cannot hear what i say < where are they?
Are you using the web cam built into your laptop?

does it work?

please advise
When I plug in my Blue Snowball (external mike), it shows up in the Recording Tab and I can just select it when needed.

You should be able to do this for any external mike.

i will try that.
When i record my screen when playing say some movie on my laptop it does record both audio and video perfect. (if default inbuilt mike is bad it should not record movie right?).Not sure why it does not recognize my voice if i want to record some video presentation with my voice. It does not even show those test green bars when i speak at mike
I have Camtasia, and so long as I use the default mike (or select it) and so long as microphones are working, the audio will record. At this point, I am testing the presentation and do not have control panel open.

It depends on your application. The application will either use the default mike (and so you have to it set in control panel, or, you can select it in the application.

that application did not ask me to choose anything. It is working by itself.

Run CamStudio
Click Options menu
Click Audio Options, then Audio Options for Microphone

> i do not see accessories under all programs thugh. please advise

Every W7 system should have an Accessories program group that looks something like this:

User generated image
But if you don't have this, you can create your own shortcut to the Sound Recorder applet, as follows:

%SystemRoot%\system32\SoundRecorder.exe

For a standard W7 install, SystemRoot is C:\Windows so the shortcut would be:

C:\Windows\system32\SoundRecorder.exe

> not able to find sound under control panel either

That probably means you're viewing by Category. In the upper right of Control Panel, click the drop-down and select either Small or Large icons:

User generated image
Then you'll see the Sound item (along with all the other items in Control Panel):

I do not know how to enable mikeXYZ and mikeABC separately and also combinedly?

my goal is prepare some technical presentation on java using my voice which i am not able to do yet
movie recording and my presentation video recording uses different mikes?yes.
No!!!
When your playing any media with sound on your PC the sound usually comes out of the speakers by default.
So when you record using a capture tool with a mic,
all and any of the background sounds coming from your desktop or in the room are included along with your voice at the Microphone.
The microphone is an external device not connected to your sound card.
The capture tool is the one that will record both your voice and the video with sound playing on your desktop.
No need to modify or set any  other device ,refs to>>when i record my own java presentation it should only record what i am speacking using mikeABC.

When you want to highlight certain areas I would use the capture tool ( recording tools options to zoom in and highlight those areas in the video playing on your desktop.)

Can you confirm the MIc is recording ok have you done a test recording?
which recording device ( capture) are you using?
The steps is to open to the video on your desktop, play it at full screen then start capturing it and speaking into your mic at the same time,
Then use the short keys to zoom in and zoom out to emphasize certain areas.
Here's an example of a capture with zoom and music playing in the background on the desktop with speaking into a mic.
