I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You may need Reverse Lookup for Harlequin to accept your email. If the receiver cannot determine the veracity of the sender, it will reject it. Reverse Lookup at your end may fix it.

I have a ptr for my mail server mail.mydomain.com that resolves correctly online. Are you talking about reverse look up for my mail server internally?

scottmoody99Author Commented:
this is only happening with one domain optonline.net.

all others are working correctly.

So you have Reverse Lookup and that should be OK.

Have you asked the administrator at optonline.net?  Maybe they have blacklisted you for some reason

scottmoody99Author Commented:
I will follow up with them in the morning.

our mx record is for mail.sci****inc.com and the ptr for mail.sci****inc.com resolves correctly to our ip. My confusion comes when this message is mentioning the mail severs internal name which is only on our internal network. Not sure if I'm seeing this correctly.

mentioning the mail severs internal name which is only on our internal network.  <-- If your own internal network is rejecting the other domain, then also look at your anti virus settings. I have seen Norton Consumer reject mail before it leaves. Whatever A/V you have, check the email settings and perhaps put in an exception for optonline.

Using Symantec endpoint. It's rejected immediately with the returned message form any using including admins. the Unacceptable greeting in the returned message doesn't bring anything up when searching online for this issue.

I have Symantec Endpoint running on my own machine. Go to Symantec, Change Settings, Exceptions, Configure Settings, Add, Security Risk Exceptions, Web Domain and try entering optonline there.

Under Virus and Spyware, Configure Settings, Outlook AutoProtect. Maybe disable it (only temporarily) and see if that has an effect.

By the way "It's rejected immediately with the returned message form any using including admins" means it is an internal rejection almost for sure because of Anti Virus.

No luck on any of the suggested AV options. disabled in on my workstation as well as the server with the same end result. No event log errors either.

JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
Interesting because it is an internal rejection (not the other end). I have only seen Anti Virus do this.

scottmoody99Author Commented:
I agree. the error Is from my internal mail server and only references it so it certainly seems the issue would be on the server itself.

issue has been send to the top level support at optonline.net

I should have some info in 24-72 hours.

I'm being told the reason I cant send to optonline.net is because my Reverse DNS does not match SMTP Banner
0
JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
Can you get your local ISP involved to fix the Reverse DNS?  That was one of the first things we talked about here.

Do you need to add a special record for optonline?
0
scottmoody99Author Commented:
I have the correct PTR record in place for mail.mydomain.com. I believe it's the email security device that's adding the banner which is different. I'm looking into changing that now and will see if that clears things up.

scottmoody99Author Commented:
it looks like the smtp banner on my exchange server is showing HARLEQUIN.mymailserver.internal  (which is the internal server name) It looks like this can be changed to mail.mydomain.com to match my ptr and mx record. Will this change cause any issue internally?
0
JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
It should not, unless somehow you have multiple banners. Use the one that works best and just have one.
1
scottmoody99Author Commented:
My concern was that it would cause some kind of issue with my internal dns since the banner would be changed form the internal host name. Just trying to be 100% sure so I don't end up taking down the mail server.
