Upgrading Windows 2008 R2 with SQL server to Windows 2012

I have a Windows 2008 R2 domain controller with SQL 2008 loaded with live running databases. I would like to do an upgrade with out rebuilding it. (an in place upgrade)

Is this possible with SQL loaded on it? My understanding also is I cannot go to 2012 R2 until I upgrade to 2012.

Thank you

You can upgrade a Windows version in a machine that has SQL Server installed. You just need to be sure that SQL Server version that exists is compatible with the new Windows version.
For MSSQL 2008 I can confirm that is compatibly with Windows 2012R2.

A couple of issues I wouldn't do an in-place upgrade for a Domain Controller. Second issue is I wouldn't run SQL Server on a Domain Controller either. Now depending on your current physical infrastructure you might be restricted to running one server, so it's possible to do an in-place upgrade but I would create virtual machines instead.

"The recommended way to upgrade a domain is to promote domain controllers that run newer versions of Windows Server and demote older domain controllers as needed. "
