I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

First things:
Locate Serial number - see if the units are still within warranty
Confirm Serial/Web Access - run a self diagnostic test and confirm the issues with the unit (it might not be the battery's)
Confirm the Power load with the existing hardware
Obtain a new Quote with warranty to protect the system
contact SmartOnline and confirm if spare are available

Review the information above and confirm the units are still good to cover you hardware (and the power is sufficient to allow for Auto Shutdown.) Compare the cost for new against units with warranty then present the decision back for purchase (you may find there is not much difference between cost and/or a deal to replace old hardware could be available). Ensure that you have central management of all servers via the UPS for auto shutdown and the Self test is configured to email out Monthly.

I get UPS batteries from the manufacturer via my local supplier. That is a the best source and I have done this for multiple UPS units at multiple clients.

Cost varies by the number and size of the batteries, but it typically costs me a couple of hundred dollars for a mid-size UPS.

The batteries are normally sealed lead-acid and are more expensive than ordinary consumer batteries and must be disposed of at a proper recycle location.

How old is the UPS unit? It may be almost as economical in the long term to replace it.

It's more than 7 years old

Even with UPS units, the technology changes and, in some cases, you can get a better unit for what was paid 7 years ago. Consider replacing it, but if it is strong and useful in your environment, get batteries from the manufacturer (call your local supplier).
7 Years is quite old, see what they can offer you out there. APC at times offer a Trade in option for replacing other suppliers solutions for one of theirs.

How do I confirm Web Access and run self diagnosis
JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
It depends on the UPS (you need the documentation). For my own APC unit, I need to connect it to my computer and install the APC software on the computer. That allows me to run tests on the unit.
The UPS will have either a NIC or a serial connection.

the NIC will allow you to assign an IP to the device and connect over telnet, if this has not yet been configured you may need to complete the initial setup but CLI over the serial port on the device. Once connected up (you can get a serial to usb converter) via something like putty you will generally see a default options screen allowing you to complete a configuration of the device.

UPS batteries are relatively easy to change out.

As for the cost, just pull a battery and look on for prices.  I've purchased several from good sellers with excellent feedback and have not been disappointed.

Here is a normal status screen (UPS is connected to computer as noted).

My ups is currently connected to servers

Can't I access this page online through the servers??
You will need to confirm how the UPS is connected to your Servers (is this via IP or Console/serial cables)

If this is by serial cable you will be able to access the UPS from the server that has the physical connection. You may need a local copy of Putty and have the connection default settings for the unit confirmed, Baud rates etc.. (pull down the user manual for the device this will tell you the setting required).

If the server has software already installed you maybe able to use this to connect to the UPS and managed it from there.

The above image shows that the UPS has an internal IP assigned and so access here is via a WebGUI on port 6547

My UPS uses two 7aH (i.e. Amp-Hour) 12 Volt sealed lead-acid batteries.
They are identical to the ones fitted in intruder & fire alarms and last about 3-5 years.

I purchased my last replacement batteries from an Intruder Alarm Wholesaler.
It's probably the cheapest source.

This is what they look like ..
