W10 HP desktop lost OS

A fairly new windows 10 HP desktop was dropped a couple of feet after which programs all still work,  datafiles ok still work but windows 10 disappeared, says no Windows.  I suggested trying a restore point after confirming nothing appears to be loose cables all look OK

How did you confirm that the programs still works if the operating system was missing and thus Windows cannot start?

I don't quite understand you, how can the programs work if you've lost the Operating system?
Do you get past the bios? where does the computer throw an error? does it pass the BIOS, do you get to the windows login screen?

Sadly I am helping someone intermittently here using face time out of our  geography.   He told me that he was able to load his programs but when he tried to do the start menu none of the items are there and when he tried to click windows 10 when he searched  for windows 10 it said no windows
I'm waiting to hear back from him as he is currently trying to do the restore point Process

I'm afraid you lost me completely.
Are you saying the person tried to search for windows 10 inside the start menu?
Could he possible be looking for the windows 10 update symbol while running windows 7 or 8?
Asta CuTechnical consultant & graphic designAuthor Commented:
He was able to restore it to the day before the computer fell and again the same issue he did a reboot and I recommended he run SFC /scannow which is currently running.

The thing that's odd is that the window icon on the bottom left is purple and then turns white but when he clicks theWindow icon which should present him with the start menu and all the cantata and other programs or links he had  pinned to the start menu have all disappeared and when he clicks that window icon there's nothing;  nothing happens

I hope I'm not adding to the confusion. He is quite confused because Windows 10 was working beautifully  until he tripped on the cord, computer fell a couple of feet and then he no longer had the  environment that he  is used to and I'm trying to figure it out and help him  restore things back to before the fall

I  i'm awaiting a call from him find out status

Read the following and thinking perhaps the missing or damaged start menu may have user account problem as someone found they checked the policy being applied to pic  and found that User Account Control (UAC) was disabled, so re-enable UAC and after a reboot, had the Start Menu back in action.

Does this make sense with the additional information posted?

UAC has nithing to do with Windows Metro interface which you are teying to call by click ping on that Windows icon. The drive inside the machine is damaged. If there is a backup taken to external storage then replace the drive in pc and restore from backup.
If it is HDD in this PC then scan it with its vendor made test tool. Such as Seatools or WDDiag from seagate and western digital. Can be easily found on web site of the disk vendors.

Thank you for your response.

Although he is still checking the hardware components, this was one indicator he emailed last night. He will check Hdd as suggested

One new observation:  If I left click the My Computer icon there is a prolonged freeze; if I right click the information comes up immediately.  Similarly, if I left click on a picture file there is a prolonged wait before the file opens; a right click brings up the file contents immediately.  However, seeing a picture now has become impossible on this computer.  I tried to open a simple JPEG image in the pictures folder on the C drive and, after a delay of about a minute the message "Invalid value for registry" popped up.

There is a hardware damage. Before trying anything - test the HDD. Open the box and see that all cables, all parts are sitting correctly in their places. No loose cables.
If it is ok then either RAM or video controller went bad. In this case you can do not much than replacing the PC.

HW checked so far ok from last communication
Waiting to hear

Event log had what he thought was hundreds of errors that were all about things such as this

svchost (3148) TILEREPOSITORYS-1-5-21-1730992688-2170346420-2639683965-1001: Corruption was detected during soft recovery in logfile C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer\Database\EDB.log. The failing checksum record is located at position END. Data not matching the log-file fill pattern first appeared in sector 75 (0x0000004B). This logfile has been damaged and is unusable.

So at the very least we're going to need to fix or repair or delete the damaged log files and I have to research how to do that unless you have some ideas.

In one report where someone had lost contana and the search menu in windows 10 after an update, their fix was to change theme  which also fixed their mouse problem where the left click wasn't being responsive whereas the right quick in windows environments  was and  and also test using a new user ID ... all of which were going to try
noxchoGlobal Support CoordinatorCommented:
The error says that recovery went not well. Why did it happen? You don't know. You reported a problems with opening pictures - this is not depending on theme or Cortana.
Try to simply install Windows 10 new. You will do this at the end in any case, Thus save your time and nerves.

This W10 free upgrade done a few months ago and icon gone  but would do that as a last resort

At this point not his option

Since all the research I've done so far show so many other people that have lost the start menu and many of the things that he's exhibiting seem to be something that they can resolve and that the corrupted  tiledatalayer files can be resolved for him as well.

I think the complexity here is because the source for all this varies...HW from the fall and SW corruptions from failed recovery attempts when Windows finally loaded and he saw new problems

I may have posted this too soon since so much has been done and more to do. Your help and insight is appreciated.  The loss of the start menu for many if you Google it you'll find that it's quite a widespread problem on windows 10
Asta CuTechnical consultant & graphic designAuthor Commented:
Should I close and award this and ask another specific question about the corrupted files and fixing them?  The subject of this has surely not applied when the problem was further analyzed.

Yes, that would be the correct flow.
