Permissions For Active Directory Users and Computers

I know that a regular user can be granted access to Active Directory Users and Computers by going into advanced mode and setting permissions settingso for the OUs/user accounts/computer objects to grant whatever access to delegate administration rights for varying ability levels of IT staff. What is the current best practice for this? Does anyone have any advice/suggestions to flush out the requirements/setup of such a thing? Are there any recent improvements with this area that are available?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

There really is no "best practice" in this situation. However there are some guidelines you should use to ensure a smooth operational transition when applying permissions.

- Create Groups with meaningful names and assign users to these groups i.e. HelpDeskAdmins
- Use the Delegate Of Control Wizard to assign permissions (try to stay away from adding ACL's manually via the security tab on the AD object.
- Apply permissions based on OU specific criteria, meaning only apply permissions where necessary and not at the top level domain

Aside from that those are some of the guidelines that I follow and they work well.

Will.
