Are you using SSMS 2014? If so, install SP1 that fixes some known bugs.

It looks like your .Net assembly might be corrupt. Try reinstalling .Net 4:

Why trying to reinstall I just get message to say .net is already installed
It's not listed in add remove programs
Windows 10

Russell FoxDatabase DeveloperCommented:
It's probably hidden because you cannot uninstall files required by Windows (which I guess .Net 4 is in Windows 10?), but I just found this: Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool.

I have .net 4 and 4.5 installed. tried 4.6 too
I had already run this program to repair but it didn't fix anything
I also found a ".net validator" program on MSDN, run this, and every version of .net is valid
so no answer yet

When you reinstalled on your local machine, did you use the same source (download, DVD) that you used originally? Your source could be corrupt - try downloading a fresh copy.

Sql server NAtive Client.
Do you have more than one version of SSMS installed?

I downloaded fresh copy

its seems like have two copies, 2008 and 2012, I can't see a simple uninstall, there are many, many SQL Server items in control panel, not e.g. "SQL Server management studio"

It's installed as part of the SQL database, usually. The good news is that you can have two of them installed, even running, at the same time. It might be worthwhile to poke around each of them in Start-All Programs: maybe one is broken but the other is working:

Start-All Programs-SQL Server 2008 R2-SQL Server Management Studio
OR
Start-All Programs-SQL Server 2012-SQL Server Management Studio

You can also download just the "SQL Server Management Studio" (previously "management tools"), which might be easier than uninstalling the entire database (though honestly if it's corrupt, you probably should).

You don't need two different versions of SSMS. My guess is that somehow the 2nd installation messed up and now you can't use both.
I recommend you to uninstall both and the reinstall SSMS 2012, since it can also connect to MSSQL 2008 databases.

I gave up on this, taking too much time, and started using another PC. I will perhaps format PC with issue

An uninstall and re install with take less time than a format but is up to you.
Good luck.
