HTML5 pattern not working

I have the input tag pattern="[0-9]{1,2}+(\.[0-9]{1,2})?", which I was hoping would validate the input to 1 or 2 digits, and optional decimal point with 1 or 2 digits following. In fact, the pattern does nothing. I can type anything at all into this input file, including letters with no message. I've used patterns elsewhere and they've worked, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong here. The complete input statement:

<input type="text" name="DOPOpercent" style="text-align: right" pattern="[0-9]{1,2}+(\.[0-9]{1,2})?" size="4" value=""/>

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

This seems to work after superficial testing
<input type="text" pattern="\d\d?\.?\d{1,2}?" />

Yup, that worked. Hmmm, I've used the bracketed range before. Don't know why it's not working here.
