Lenovo Windows 7 Downloads or Recovery CDs

I deal with Dells but have a couple customers that have Lenovo Desktops. Now... my understanding is that what I am looking for are Lenovo Windows 7 DVD's. They are not considered OEM. They are considered SLP. SLP copies of Windows are special copies made for manufacturers like Dell, Lenovo, HP, etc. and you have to have the copy that was made for the specific manufacturer that you are installing it on. SLP software will look in to the BIOS of the computer to determine if it is a HP, Dell, whatever and if it is than Windows will completely skip the activation process. That is my understanding of what SLP is and what I need. Does anyone think this is not correct?

Does anyone know of a link where I can download Lenovo Windows Media and/or Recovery CDs so I can wipe these computers out and do a fresh install?

You need to contact Lenovo Support and purchase the DVD you need for the machine. I use Lenovo exclusively. I have purchased the Recovery DVD's for various computers and this is how it works. You cannot just download them. The cost, however, is nominal per set.

So... are they Recovery CD's specific to a model or are they Windows Installation CDs for all Lenovos? What information does support ask for before purchasing?
JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
All Lenovo Recovery DVD's are specific to model. You need the Model Code (2306-CTO for example) and the Serial Number.

Most properly installed Lenovo machines will have the recovery partition. Do you not have this on your Lenovo machines?
Usually achieved by pressing the F11 on start up, or the newer "OneKey Recovery System".
For OneKey -

In Windows, press the Novo button or double-click OneKey Recovery icon to start the Lenovo OneKey Recovery System.
    Click System Backup.
Select a back-up location and click Next to start the backup.

The recovery DVD's have to be made on the same system and the practice stopped with Windows 7. Windows 10 recovery is now handled by Microsoft.

You also need to test the set you make. The user-made sets mostly, but not always, work. They need to be tested. The purchased sets are normally good.

I think I went down the wrong path even mentioning Recovery CD. I am going to refer back to Dell. Dell ships a "Re-installation CD" with their computers. It is the SLP CD (or DVD as the case may be) and it re-installs Windows so if your hard drive goes south and with it goes the recovery partition all you have to do is boot the re-installation CD, install Windows and download the drivers. It is a Windows installation CD. Nothing machine specific about it. Does Lenovo offer those?
JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
Nothing machine specific about it. Does Lenovo offer those? <-- No.

You make your own - machine specific and test them.
Or, you purchase from Lenovo - again machine specific

They are not considered OEM. They are considered SLP.

Just to avoid any confusion here All Windows 7 OEM reinstallation DVDs from the big manufacturers (the so called "Royalty" manufacturers) use SLP - including all your Dell OEM DVDs  - SLP is specifically a system designed for OEM installers

The difference between the Dell and Lenovo DVDs are that the Dell DVDs are true installation DVDs (modified Microsoft Windows 7 DVDs locked to Dell hardware) but the Lenovos are Recovery DVDs and reinstall an image file specific to that range of models - Despite that they also use SLP so when the image is restored it is also activated (because Lenovo hardware is detected).

There are no legitimate downloads for either Dell or Lenovo installers but both companies offer the installers on media that you can purchase direct.  As John points out for Lenovo you need to specify the machine model while a Dell Reinstallation DVD will reinstall on any Dell hardware.

The Lenovo Recovery disk set also includes the Lenovo utilities & tools which are installed and configured as part of the process.  This includes a utility to create a recovery disk set from a working installation ("Lenovo Rescue and Recovery").

one thing about the recovery discs as mentioned the Lenovo discs recover the partition to the way it came from the manufacturer, Therefore it contains all the settings, drivers and applications that were originally installed when the system was first purchased. This could also mean that crapware software is also reinstalled, ie trial software, unwanted antivirus apps, etc.  Where is the Dell discs reinstall only the OS, you have to reinstall drivers and any applications you need.
