I want a drop down with years (2015, 2016 etc) to default to the current year.

How?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Add a default to the control on the form.  Use Year(Date()) to extract the year from the current date.

The correct way is the way Pat posted above...
...set the Default Value property of the control

You can do it via VBA, ...but it is more efficient to use the Default Value property

Sometimes you can't use internal VBA functions or hard-coded values as defaults and then your only choice would be to use VBA.  In that case, you would use the FORM's BeforeUpdate event.
If IsNull(Me.cboYear) Then
    Me.cboYear = Year(Date())
End If

Open in new window

The downside of this is that the user doesn't see the default as he is entering the data and that was why I chose the Default property of the control.

You could also set the default at the table level.
