How to Connect Windows IIS Servers wtih SQL Database

Users will access a web site to access reports on a SQL data base.

I'm looking for some direction on how to implement a web server and and SQL database.  In terms of security and manageability what is the best practice?  Should they exist in a Active Directory or as stand alone servers in a work group?  Is it best to put the web servers in a DMZ zone or can they exist in the same zone?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

by "reports on a SQL database" , do you mean SQL Server Reporting Services reports?  If not, can you explain a little more about these reports?  Are they files stored in SQL?  Queries that will return data from SQL?  or ???

stored procedure to retrieve data from SQL data base.

So you're going to need an interface which allows the user to select the report title, and which displays the results, as well as code to connect to the database and executes the stored procedure.  And this doesn't even touch related subjects such as user permissions/access.

Unless you already have those pieces in place, you may be better off using SSRS.  You can develop reports in SSRS that execute stored procedures, and SSRS provides the user interface, permissions mechanisms, etc that you'll need for report display & management.  Plus, there's a ton of documentation for SSRS configuration best practices, security, etc.  Here is a good starting point.
