"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I can download (retrieve) two-year-old and older SMS messages if they are routed through Google Voice.
T-Mobile has a similar capability.

these old sms messages are not routed through google voice

Once the message is delivered to the handset or elapsed beyond the expiry time, these messages are not retrievable again by the same or new handset.

In case you do want these SMS (henceforth), then you will need to look up and register with a website, which provide you such service, by default, carriers don't provide this feature, such as MySMS
