ExternalClass - To which HTML element do I assign the class?

I'm configuring the HTML/CSS for an automated email. I found a number of sources recommending the use of ExternalClass. To which parent element do I assign ExternalClass? <body>? My background <table>? Something else?

.ExternalClass, .ExternalClass p, .ExternalClass span, .ExternalClass font,
.ExternalClass td, .ExternalClass div {line-height: 100%;}

In the above case, "ExternalClass" is just a class name. The CSS you've provided will set the line-height property of any HTML element with a class of "ExternalClass" assigned. It will also set any child element of type p, span, font, td, or div.

The one that stands out to me is "td". For properly formatted HTML a "td" element should only ever be the child of a "tr" element. For that reason I'd set the class attribute of the enclosing "tr" element to "ExternalClass".
