document a firewall

we are doing some risk assessment work for a number of our security infrastructure. Including the main perimeter firewall. I was wondering what information would you document if someone asked you about your firewall setup? What kind of information could be stored in a CMDB for a perimeter firewall? if you wanted to get to know more about a firewall what kind of questions would you ask/want asking?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

1. I would start with make, model, and install date (age).
2. Are all the subscriptions (av, ip, etc) active and up to date.
3. Who can access the firewall as administrator, and make changes. Are changed logged?
4.Who is responsible to check firewall logs and respond to alerts.
5. Depending upon complexity, I might review the firewall rules to insure they are doing what you want, and also to confirm obsolete items have been deleted.
6. Depending upon your budget and objective, I would consider hiring (or doing it yourself if the skills are available in house) to scan the firewall for weaknesses.
