Netbios name with period in it

Hi Experts,

Have a domain which has a period in it so its NETBIOS name is a.b.internal and domain name is xy.test. Single forest, single domain. Forest and Domain are 2008 R2. They are having issues setting up 802.1x authentication because it uses netbios name and it has a period in it so when user tries to login using domain name xy\user1 it does not work. 95% of clients are Windows XP machines and they have prop. applications and Unix machines that reference a.b.internal NETBIOS name

They don't have an inhouse Exchange so that should help but besides a domain rename are there other options to fix netbios name?

TIA

I want you to follow this link and scroll down to the regedit for xp.   set the domain on one test machine, reboot then login.  If it works you can set up a gpo to hit all the xp machines so they default to that domain.
