Best way to merge avhdx and vhdx files to free up disk space.

Virtual hard drive is located below (PDC.vhdx), understand this is the hard drive for the VM.

Question is how to clean up, remove the avhdx files in the backup folder, my understanding is this is best not to do manually.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You want to delete the snapshots of the VM to merge the avhdx into the vhdx.  More information http://mikefrobbins.com/2012/08/14/hyper-v-live-merge-snapshot-feature-in-windows-server-2012/

This isn't the case with my 2012 server, avhdx files continue to grow.

Shutdown (to a power off) the VM in question.  Do they go away?
Lee W, MVPTechnology and Business Process AdvisorCommented:
To be clear, in the VM, tell the VM to shutdown so it gets to an "off" state.

(NOTE: they may take time to merge)

I select shutdown and they show off.

do I leave them off until they merge?
Lee W, MVPTechnology and Business Process AdvisorCommented:
Yes - do you see any disk activity?  If they haven't merged in an hour or two, I would resume - that may not have been in the issue - but in earlier versions of Hyper-V avhd's wouldn't merge unless the VM was off.
WORKS2011Austin Tech CompanyAuthor Commented:
So, to clarify I have to leave them off until the files disappear? I didn't leave them off for any longer than 15 minutes.

Do all the VM's have to be off?
