assuming you have extracted out the date portion

to_timestamp('2012-08-12T22:08:45.274Z','yyyy-mm-dd"T"hh24:mi:ss.ff"Z"')

will turn it into a timestamp

if you want it as a DATE type, then cast the timestamp

cast(to_timestamp('2012-08-12T22:08:45.274Z','yyyy-mm-dd"T"hh24:mi:ss.ff"Z"')as date)

the "oracle date format"?

Oracle does NOT store dates or timestamps "in a format" (they are stored as sets of integers)

Humans need "formats" for dates, not the dbms, and what we see is controlled by nls_date_format

e.g.
alter session set nls_date_format='yyyy-mm-dd hh24:mi:ss';
select sysdate from dual;

alter session set nls_date_format='mm-dd-yyyy hh24:mi:ss';
select sysdate from dual;
