Best way to set up 2x Hyper-V Servers and a Synology NAS

Looking to set up a couple of 2012 R2 Hyper-V servers in the lab and have them share a Synology Rackstation. I want to see the performance and management with the VMs on the Synology.

This is what I was thinking:
Set up a few VMs on Server1
Set up a few VMs on Server2
Have the VMs be on shared storage (Synology)
Move the VMs from Server1 to Server2 if I need to do maintenance on Server1

Would I set this up with iSCSI? Or is there a better way to do it? Or what do I need to order to do all this?

Set up the LUNs
Bind iSCSI on each host
Deliver each LUN to each host (LUN IDs need to be identical for both)
Format NFTS, assign drive letter, and set to OFFLINE on host 1
Open Disk Management on host 2 and ignore initialization messages and set OFFLINE
Create your Hyper-V cluster
Add Storage
Add to CSV

LUN 0: 1.5GB for quorum
LUN 1: Sum of RAM on all nodes - RAM on 1 Node + 150GB

Run the quorum wizard in Failover Cluster Manager to set the witness disk.
Configure both hosts to store Hyper-V configuration files in C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1 (LUN 1 above in CSV).

You will then have a Hyper-V failover cluster.

Your storage would be the single point of failure as would your iSCSI switch if only 1.

I got the Synology set up with iSCSI and I can see the same data on both hosts. Looks like I need to set it up again with 2 LUNs. I have ~26TB of space, so I would do 1.5TB on one LUN and the remainder on another LUN correct?

I am not sure about how to create a cluster or CSV.

Found the Failover Clustering in Features. I always forget that some things are under features and not roles.....I now have Failover Clustering installed on 2 machines.

Been doing some trial and error. Think I might be a tad stuck.

I just have a single node in the cluster and made sure the drives on the Synology were attached and showing up. I did Q and V for the drive letters. Added the V and Q LUNs to Storage under the Failover Cluster Manager. Both drives show online. Ran through the Configure Cluster Quorum Settings, selected 'disk witness' to Q and it was successful.

I added another server to the cluster, choose both disks, and ran through validation. When I go to disk management on the server I just added, both drives are showing offline. Should those Q and V drives show up on the new node?

I think I am getting hung up on what Disk Management shows. Now that I have added the shared storage to CSV, I can go to c:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\ and see the same thing on both machines.

Can I create a VM on one host and a VM on another host? Then would it kick over to the other host if it was rebooted or whatever? Maybe I should just try. :)

Yes you can set up a VM on either host using Failover Cluster Manager.

Once the VM is up and running right click it and Live Migrate it to Best Possible Node then back again.

I was probably over-thinking it compared to when I tried it in the past. 2012 R2 makes it a lot easier. I did get 2 hosts up and sharing the Synology. Was able to live migrate and only miss a couple of packets when doing a ping. I could also shut down one of the hosts and the VMs would move over automagically.

Thanks for the high level instructions. Just what I needed.

I wonder what sort of performance I could get out of using the Synology compared to local storage. This is at least a RackStation with a bit more horsepower.

If 10GbE then throughput should be decent. If Gigabit that depends. We're seeing more and more saturation at the Gigabit level.
