I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Have you tried Gimp?  Not sure it's simple enough for you, but it's definitely powerful.
Your MacBook Pro may already have iPhoto or Photos installed. Those programs will do that an more. Also the built-in Preview will do resizing and a modicum of basic editing, but not nearly as much as iPhoto or Photos.

For free programs, GIMP is very powerful.

You can download GIMP here:

Once you have downloaded it, double-click on the downloaded .dmg file to open the archive. Then drag and drop the enclosed into your applications folder.

Double-click on the You my get a warning that it can't be opened because it is from an unknown developer.

If that happens, go to Apple Menu>System Preferenced>Security & Privacy and click on "open anyway".

The try again to open it.

Documentation for GIMP is here:

I'm retired on a limited income, so a fan of free software, but as Lee W noted above GIMP is not simple; in fact it's notoriously clunky albeit powerful. I've found it well worth purchasing Affinity's products.

If you can bring yourself to spend $60 you can get a program as polished—and almost as powerful—as Photoshop:

Affinity Photo is a gem:

There's also the companion vector design software Affinity Designer for a similar price:

There's an alternative to GIMP which isn't as powerful, but is also free, and more user-friendly:

If you wish to follow Strung's advice and use Apple's own free apps, Photos is a big improvement on its predecessor iPhoto and is installed with Yosemite and ElCapitan. There's a positive review here:
It should do everything you have asked for.

i downloaded gimp(other thread) and installed it, did 10mins of things and it all vanished never to be found again.

Don't you love Macs?  I can't find half the things I install on a Mac.
@jagguy:  Did you copy it from the DMG file to your Applications folder, or just try running it from the image file. You need to copy it into your applications folder.
@Lee: Just type the name of the application into Spotlight.

Affinity is great as well as actor and pixelmator, all reasonably priced.

Most people however will be just fine with the built in "Photos" app. It actually can do a lot.

@Lee - "I can't find half the things I install on a Mac." - type Cmd+Space to open Spotlight Search and type away ;) It searches through everything.
